Chapter 7, Using Brain Science to Improve Study Skills, October 10-16

One of the key concepts in this chapter is that we use all the senses to learn, a process called multi-sensory integration.  Of all the senses, visualization is the most powerful.

Think about how you can use multiple senses (visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, gustatory, olfactory) to be successful in challenging material in your present courses or think about one of the scenarios below and apply this concept to being successful in one of these situations.

For your second post, read what other students are saying and reply to their post.  Your reply to another student can be shorter than your posting on using multiple senses to learn.

1.            You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read.  It went in one ear and out the other.
2.            In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
3.            You signed up for a philosophy class because it meets general education requirements. You are not interested in the class at all.
4.            You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
5.            You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.
6.            You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name.
7.            You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.

8.            You are taking a math course that you need for graduation and don’t understand some of the math problems.  You are worried that you may not pass this course.

  1. If I have read a chapter in economics and cannot remember what I've read, I can try approaching the chapter in a different way. First, I can skim the entire chapter to try and glean the main points. Then, I can re-read and highlight and underline key ideas as I go. When I'm done reading, I can immediately review my key points. I can review again a minute later, an hour later, a week later, and then a month later to commit the information to long term memory. I can also engage my other senses while I study to aid my memory. I can create flash cards, say difficult to remember facts outloud, burn a certain scented candle or chew a certain flavored gum only when studying economics to help my recall.

    1. I think the flash cards is a good idea for your economics class... and also remember that there are tutors available. I'm not a huge believer in the candles and gum approach, as I feel that your understanding of the material is more important than the smells and tastes you experience during your studying.
I hope you do well in economics, and know that you will do well between your study habits and utilization of tutors or other study aids. Good luck!!! (I don't actually believe in luck--- I KNOW you'll do fine!)

    2. Hello Jacalyn,
I believe everything you mentioned here is good and would be easy to remember. However, flashcards and reviewing would be good example and helpful because reviewing after studding would show you how much you have learned from your studying. Also, the flash cards are really helpful because flash cards make it easy and clear to study. I will add something to your topic, what you can do is put yourself or a word that you would always remember because it helps a lot.

    3. Hi Jacalyn
I have read your post and I like the way that how you study also I noticed that we have common things. Highlighting and underlining the important things is a good idea, and its grape our attention so we can focus on them when we read for exam or tests. At the end I hope you the best

    4. Personally I have taken economics which is a difficult class to me. I agree with your study tactics because I would always go back to re-read concepts and underline important things in my notes or book. Flashcards are effective for demand and supply graphs but other than that taking notes and highlighting key concepts is just as effective. Also reviewing after a lecture or even before can help a lot to refresh your mind!

  2. This is a serious question for me. As of this course, I have changed my career path and coursework, which is significant in that it requires advanced math and chemistry classes, which I have not been particularly excited about. The end goal is the carrot on the stick, and so, the advanced classes are something I'm seeing as a challenge and reward in completing. It is easy for me to say "I haven't taken an algebra class in 22 years... this is going to be hard," but, if I keep in consideration that I have many friends who are ready and willing to help in my math classes, I should have much less stress. Also, my roommate and best friend is a chemistry major. This class is my biggest fear, as my performance in high school was poor. This extra support will be beneficial, I hope... I just hope that the same support will be there for the advanced chemistry (organic) classes is there. Wish me luck!!!

    1. I know just how you feel about math and science! The last I took either was 15+ years ago and I didn't do that great. I really admire your courage to shift into a more math and science heavy fiekd, despite your anxiety. You seem really dedicated and motivated to be successful. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised and find it isn't that bad, after all!

    2. Hello Tiffany, I am so glad that you are having support from your friends. I am sure your friends would love to help you pass your classes. Just remember to stay positive and put in all of your effort. Don't think about your past how you did poorly in high school don't beat yourself up for something that happened in your past. Just remember your outcome will be great.Hang in there!!

    3. I am with you in the math department, it just has never been something that I was really comfortable with and felt like I ever knew what I was doing in that class. I really enjoy trying to learn math, or at least the thought of it, but it always ends the same way, with me freaking out because I just don't get it. I have been taking the algebra approach so far, but this time I try to take math I am taking a statistics approach and see how that goes. Hopefully I understand it better. I am lucky because I switched majors as well upon taking this course and my major only requires statistical math rather than algebraic. I wish you the best on completing your math! You can literally accomplish anything as long as your mind is set on it! That has been a long, hard road of learning for me, but it is so true. Determination is often more important than obtaining the full knowledge. Bottom line, don't get discouraged, you got this!

    4. Hey Tiffany,
I also had to take high math classes and was not exactly elated when I found about about the math courses I would be needed looking back it was not that difficult. I think I course my mind into thinking that math was difficult. Also students around me had some influence on my view on math. I think that my perceptive in math was base on my past experiences since I was not the best student in high school
I recalled students saying that calculus was difficult, but after taking calculus and I can say that it not as intricate as people make it seem. All is needed to do well in math is patience and practice and I you have to be willing to find different alternatives to teaching yourself
      math.

  3. I have read a chapter in Economic class and I can’t remember what I read. This shows that we just read quickly and didn’t even know what we read. In this case, we need to use some type of senses so we could actually remember what is going on this chapter. However, this situation have happened with me before and I always used to get bad grades on my economic test. Later on, I tried to use one of the senses which is visual. The visual helped a lot on my test because when I used to study I used to put myself as an example and also used to make up a words to rhyme them with the Important word. As you can see, the senses visualization help a lot.

    1. Hi Swaleen,
I think its genius idea to make up a word thats rhymes because it would first of all be fun and a very easy way to remember an economic word! I had never thought of that idea but I am going to take your word on it and try out this technique because it sounds very useful:)

    2. I agree, it is definitely a genius way to remember and retain information you learn in class. I have had kids around me a lot, so I have watched Disney channel a lot. And I remember this one episode of Hannah Montana that I have seen where she writes a song to help her remember all of the bones in the body for the test she has to take. I realized that this is a VERY effective tool when it comes to learning just by being an adult watching Disney Channel. I think that if you have a long list of words or body parts, or even Economic ideas to learn that writing a song or a poem with rhythm would be an effective way to help you remember these terms. Also, I remember in early grade school my teachers would have us memorize a poem and then recite it to the class at the end of the week. This exercise is really helpful as an adult in college, it taught me useful ways to remember long portions of information that rhymed. I can now apply that knowledge to my studies here in college.

    3. Hi Swaleen , I also agree on using visualization because it's a good strategy. This will help you understand things much better and easier. Visualizing things playing out or an equation makes things much interesting. I had a math class and I did use visualization on my test which helped me get a good grade. This is why I fully agree with you on this.

  4. I have took a math class and I am not sure on passing this class. The class is really hard and I can't really understand anything. Math has always been hard for me. The way the numbers mix and all these calculations will make me think of not passing this class. To help me study and learn the concept better I will study and practice the math. If I keep practicing on math I will eventually memorize it and the class will not be as bad. This will help me be successful in the class. Studying at least an hour a day will help me pass the class.

    1. I can understand what you are going through. Sometimes math is very difficult to comprehend, and the wide array of knowledge that needs to be learned is hard to grasp and remember. Math requires a lot of hours to study and practice, usually the strategies I utilize is using flashcards, YouTube videos online, or any other support such as practice tests and quizzes to test my knowledge. Whenever I feel like I am not going to pass the class or fail a test, I try to have a positive attitude about it and learn from my previous experiences. Whenever I come into the class I always come with the thought that I will learn the material and pass the class. This is how I can be successful in passing my math class.

  5. 2. In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.

-This would probably be one of my favorite types of assignments. I love being able to utilize notecards for vocabulary and studying purposes and this would definitely be one of those assignments that would require that kind of attention. I would also probably read the chapter fully at least one time, and skim over the readings again at least 2-3 more times. I would suggest writing up the notecards for all 100 muscles and then take a walk while quizzing yourself on the material. I honestly wish I was taking more classes that require me to do this type of studying because I find it extremely helpful using notecards, because that requires writing and reading the material one more time, which also helps commit it to memory.

    1. I just thought of additional information that I would probably use as well. I could write a poem, or a song that rhymes, that includes all of the names of the muscles I am having to remember. This would be helpful because even humming the tune during an exam would help remember the names and even certain orders of muscles or whatever else I would be learning. The notecard strategy is also very useful for foreign languages and learning the words and vocabulary.

  6. 5-Thinking of a class such as history in a very boring way will now allow my brain to function and I will lose interest in the class, which will probably lead me to failing the class or getting a really poor grade. In order to be successful in that class, I must keep on telling my brain positive things and make myself more interested in the topics discussed in class, try to study more about them and follow up in the history from several of years ago. This technique will help improve my skills in liking the class and getting good grades as well as good information out of it.

    1. What I find helpful in making a class for exciting is relating the information to my life. If you think history is boring, take the time to look up a piece of information that you are studying that can relate to your everyday life. Maybe you are interested in the art of that era or the way that political views were set up and some fun laws that will remind you when or why something happened.

    2. Great comment on finding interest in the subject. We are more likely to enjoy learning if we find it interesting.

  7. I have to take American history to graduate from SDSU and I think that history is boring; however, I can make the class fun and interesting and use techniques to learn the subject much better. History can be defined as "his story" and a story is something that I can visualize as I read to text to better my understand and remember it much more and longer. Whenever I am trying to study a chapter in history, I always try to paint images in my head as the story in the book goes on. If there is something difficult to comprehend in the text, I say it out loud so I can get a grasp about what it is, and that is how I use my audio senses as a strategy. History can also deal with remembering specific events, dates, and outcomes. Thus, having flashcards can be helpful in remembering them for an exam.

    1. Hey Martin, I completely agree, history is so boring to me! But now that I know better ways to study and make history a little bit better, it won't be as bad for me. I also make history fun by picturing all of this go down, and basically making a movie out of it in my brain, and that helps me focus so maybe it helps you!

  8. 1. You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.

I would first start off by readying the chapter to know what its about. I would highlight what I think is the most important parts and what I think will be hard for me to remember so I can come back to it and study off of that. I would think about it outloud for the material to stay in my system and not forget about it. I can use my visual senses by imagination as I read to make it more interesting for me a create an image in my mind so when It comes to taking a quiz or midterm I can remember that image and immediately know what the answer is. Since economics has a lot of words that its not as easy to remember making flashcards would be the best way to remember and by studying off of them each day it can turn short term memory into long term memory with simple techniques that came from multiple senses.

    1. I was reading your post and like the point you make about imagining the material to make it more interesting that could help because you could just re-imagine it and remember the material that way. I also like the point you make about creating flashcards I do not generally do that because I do not find it helpful but if I made them and studied them once a day that could help greatly.

  9. 1.You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.

Well in economics I would start off by reading the titles in the chapter and reading the summary to give myself an idea of what I will be reading about. While I read I would highlight the most important points and summarize the paragraphs. After forgetting I would start off by reading the main points of the chapter over again to give myself a refresher.I would then start to use the techniques we learned. I would use auditory and visual senses while reading the material. I would use auditory because I could read aloud and to try and memorize it better and visual to read and memorize main points. I would use tactile sense to write questions and go through the text to try to answer them. In textbooks they generally have Q&A and I can try to complete them to help me go over the material.

    1. That is a great idea to read the chapter summary before going in depth. It helps ease the transition into the chapter so you can digest the information at your own pace. I prefer to us auditory and visual senses as well to digest information. Great post kanar

  10. If I had a midterm coming up in my literature class and I had to read 400 pages in one month I would first divide up the pages so I would decide I would read Monday thru Friday and I would read twenty pages each day. I would have to highlight the key points and right down the things that seemed important. I would also write in my own words what each chapter was saying so I would better understand it, instead of me reading it and not knowing what I just read. I would have to look up words that I didn’t know the meaning to. I would have to work hard and really prepare myself for the midterm but I feel like if i split it up and not stress out about the midterm. Instead of postponing my studying until the night before I could be successful if i don’t hold my work off until the last second.

  12. Scenario #8: What to do with your senses if you have difficulties with math.
Personally for me, I would use a visual aid to help guide me through math. Whenever I have been in a math class and do not understand how to do a problem, I will automatically go to youtube where I can learn from the video and apply what I have learned to my math equation.Another way is to use a tactile strategy and write things out. I would jot down every step because it will help you with similar problems you will do on an exam or homework assignment. Math just keeps adding steps so knowing previous steps helps you move on to the next.

    1. I decided to comment on scenario 8 as well because I also have personal experience. I am a visual learner too and do well when I write the steps out myself but I also need to recite the steps to the problems outloud in order to remember them! It also helps when I hear the instructions a couple of times! I feel that I can't use my sense of vision alone but youtube is a great idea because it would give me the chance to hear the instructions as well which is very beneficial!

  13. 7. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.

I have experienced this before. WHat I usually do is use Visual senses in order to learn. I will lay out the formulas and repetitively memorize them. This helped a lot for tests, especially when the teacher did not show the formula on the test and we had to rely completely on our memories. I find that continuously visualizing something over and over is the key to success for me. Having the formulas auditory explained to me does help a lot too though. I would go to my teacher and have her explain while i look at the formula so I can have visual and auditory explanation.

I did scenario 5 because history is probably the worst subject in my opinion. What is usually do is wait until the last minute to study, or if I feel productive, I will make flashcards and I will study them until I know all of them front to back. But now that I know more effective ways to study I will start walking on the treadmill and study at the same time because I know that has a big affect on the brain and probably myself.

  15. I've always found History to be boring. Knowing I have to take successfully pass a American History class to graduate from SDSU I would take full advantage of my lectures and interact with the professor and my peers. I would utilize tutoring and also meet with my teacher during office hours. My textbook would be valuable so I would open it with a positive attitude and try to find many interest. I would have to be patient to understand and try and image myself in that time.Pictures can speak volumes and sometimes History books have lots of pictures. I would also have to be realistic and pay attention to detail. Before reading the material I would ask myself questions and skim the book one chapter at a time.

I also thought your approach on the textbook was solid because that is one of things that turns people off to history class, the textbook. the only advice I have that helped me was when reading the textbook, I would imagine everything I read as if I were watching it on the History Channel.

I chose this because I actually experienced this my senior year in high school when I took AP Macroeconomics. Luckily, my teacher taught us good learning habits along with the material. She had us do flashcards to help us remember the vocabulary from our textbooks, and also had us reread certain sections in class that we had trouble with. I also would reread aloud sentences or paragraphs, while reading the textbook, that had confused me the first time I read them. Then before quizzes and tests, me and my partner would test each other with fake questions as a last minute refresher.

  18. If I were faced with a scenario where I couldn't understand a math course how would i approach it?
I would say first thing would be is to find out why I'm not understanding the subject. It could be that the reason for not understanding the subject is because the professor is rocketing through the lecture. If this is the case then I would search for an alternative way of learning the subject. For example, I might search for help with a math tutor. This could have great benefits because the math tutor might the tackle the same problem but with a different approach that might be easier for me. Since I'm a visual learner, seeing a different way to solve the math problem can greatly enhance my understanding of the material. After this, I would practice the problem again and again and again until I feel confident. Also what I would do is try to relieve the stress by taking breaks here and there. Since stress can build up because I'm not understanding the material. As a matter a fact I took two breaks while writing this post

    1. I have hard time understanding math too and it is hard on me solving it. I am also a visual learner too and I have to see how it is being solved for me to understand. Asking tutor for help is a good way to start understanding. Also, asking a teacher is a good way too.

  19. I can relate to number 7 because I am enrolled in a math class that I have to study very hard in to feel even a bit of comfort. When I am studying, it does not feel as though it is enough because I still do not understand the information after reviewing it multiple times. I like to see the different ways to complete things, and it makes a lot of sense to try different steps. Once I began asking for help from other that I knew understood this math, it has been easier to complete assignments. I like seeing the many possible ways to get to one answer. I have found it easier to graph out every problem instead of doing it algebraically first. This way I get to see what the algebraic problem is asking and where the possibilities could take me.

I think if you keep practicing the question over and over and asking questions no matter how dumb the question may sound it will help you out in succeeding, and passing the class is important. Make sure to read your notes over and go through the book and look through the examples to help you understand when you can't ask a question at home.

  21. I have been falling a little behind in my math class. When I first started taking this course I completely understood everything, but as I got further into the semester things have gotten a little more tricky. The main reason I believe this is happening to me is because, I have not been doing the homework on time. I have been doing all my work on the day before it is due. Which leads to me doing bad on quizzes. After reading the text I now know that if I study more often(10 hours a week), and be sequential in my work in order to be more successful rather than skipping around in doing my homework.

  22. This is something that I have actually dealt with this semester and the first thing I had to do was stop spending so much time doubting myself! I found that with the doubt I would actually put fourth less effort because I felt like I would fail anyway! After that, I color coded my notes, correlating colors to certain concepts helped me remember what steps belonged to what type of problems. I also arranged meet ups with my class mates to study together to compare notes for clarity and ideas on different ways to approach problems. All these ideas had me reviewing the material in more ways than one helping to aid my memory and I found that auditory and visual learning techniques worked best together!

When it comes to my auditory sense I would memorize key concepts by saying them out loud over and over again. For my tactile learning sense I would use flash cards with key ideas on them. To use my sense of smell I could use a certain chapstick with a certain smell and wear when I study and when I am testing so I can use the smell to help associate with whatever I am studying. 24. I can relate to most of the statements stated above but the one I am most familiar with is number seven. I grew up loving everything about math but once I started taking advanced algebra math classes in high school, my love for math started to fade away. When I was told I had to take an algebra class in college, I immediately told myself that I had no chance in passing because math just does not come easy to me anymore. I tried to not think negatively so I tried my hardest to do whatever it takes to pass the class. I went to tutoring, I got help from my classmates as well. Turns out if you set a positive attitude you can overcome what you thought was impossible to do.

  25. Basically using the senses is a big factor due to the fact that this may determine wether one may be successful or not. It is needed in everything we do that is involved in learning. What seems to stand out most to me is that Visual learning is the most beneficial to me and helps me be successful bc if i see something done than i can conquer the task and be successful.

  26. 5. You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.

what i believe you should do if you are ever in this situation is be able to find certain topics that may help you do good in the class i believe when you find success in something you will sooner or later start to enjoy the class no matter what.

    1. I agree with you Lance. There are classes and I know there will be more that I will not really enjoy. However, if you are in that situation, might as well make the best of it and try your best. I just try to enjoy the teacher, the students, and try to soak up as much info as I can.

  27. If I was studying something difficult I would probably read the material and then re read it a couple more times. I would also make flashcards for the main points. I like to chew gum while studying and then chewing the same flavor while taking the test. I also like to work with another student at times. Sometimes the teacher explains it but another student can help me to understand the concept in a better way.

    1. Very true, flashcards are a very useful way to get the material cemented in your brain. Also working witb other students is a good idea if you're not understanding the topics the way the teacher explains it.

  28. When im trying to learn something new in math, it helps best if im able to see the step by step process in order to understand fully how its done. Seeing whoever is teaching me do it makes it that much easier to follow. Trying to understand word problems can be made easier by reading the problem aloud. Personally ive never had taste help me learn in math pr any class for that matter.

  29. 6.You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name

I really like what our chapter said about this last week. We read how the best way to remember a name is to clarify that we understood it ("you said your name was Sara"?, then repeat it in conversation ("Well, it was really nice meeting you, Sara!") We were also told it was helpful to make a personal connection with the name (my name is Sara, so I can remember she has the same name as me!)
I think these are mostly audio/kinesthetic tricks. For visual, writing the name down would probably be really helpful.

  30. 1.You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.

I have read a chapter in economics and I can't remember what I read. One way that will help me remember is trying to like it and find it interesting. Another way is to look at the meaning of what I am reading. Improve my reading comprehension by marketing the main ideas after reading the chapter. I ask myself what the main points in this chapter. While I was reading the chapter, I highlight the main ideas. Then I write a little summary on the margins. Doing all these, I can remember what I read and wrote on the margins. I can apply them to my understanding and remembering.

  32. After reading the chapter about multiple senses i can see myself applying these techniques specifically to my math courses. Because i feel my math classes are most important not only in my life but also my career i can use senses like visualization to picture an imagine about the material i am learning to help me understand the concepts. also some other techniques like highlighting, rereading, and note taking can also help understand any concepts needed to get through the material.

  33. 8. You are taking a math course that you need for graduation and don’t understand some of the math problems. You are worried that you may not pass this course.

This topic hits close to home for me and I feel like these senses applied together will really help me out in class. Using visual and auditory senses, I could really focus and hone in on the lecture in class and could also review those notes on our homework assignments online by watching the instruction videos as a secondary source. Then I could use my tactile sense by writing down the example problems in class and try to work it out on my own. Also, in addition to in-class notes and examples, though our homework is online, I could, and actually do, work my math assignments and problems out on paper before putting them in online. I feel like when I put those senses together in addition to hard work and determination, it really helps me to reach a certain level of understanding and boosts my confidence.

I personally learn very much through physical senses, and as such hands on experience with things is the best way I learn. Because of this, I struggle to retain information simply by reading or listening to a lecture. I think I could capitalize on my affinity for physical senses by trying to take active notes during lectures, thus getting me to physically do something in addition to listening. This could be applied to the reading as well; perhaps trying to highlight by reading could help tap in to those tactile/ kinesthetic senses.
